Why Do We Do This? The Heart Behind Being a Team Mom
If you’ve ever stepped into the role of a team mom, you’ve probably asked yourself at least once: Why do we do this? Why do we take on the chaos of organizing schedules, tracking down missing jerseys, coordinating snacks, and making sure a group of kids (who are not all ours) have everything they need to succeed?
For some, maybe it’s about control—you know the ultra Type A mom who wants to dictate every detail of the team? That’s not me. Sure, I have my moments (who doesn’t?), but that’s never been my reason.
For me, being a team parent has always been about something bigger. It’s about making sure my kids—and all the kids—have the best experience possible. I want them to look back on these years not just as a time they worked hard and played the game but as a time when they were part of something special. A team that felt like family. A place where they belonged.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I’m not about participation trophies or ice cream after a crushing loss. Hard work matters. Learning how to handle wins and losses is part of the game and part of life. But I can make sure that in between the blood, sweat, and tears, they’re also making memories that will last a lifetime.
That’s why I do it. Not for the credit. Not for the control. But for the moments they’ll carry with them long after the season ends. Because when the scoreboard turns off, what really matters is how they felt being part of our team.
So to all the fellow team moms out there—whether you’re running on coffee and spreadsheets or just trying to keep the chaos in check—just know this: What you do matters. More than you know.
Welcome to the huddle. Let’s make this season unforgettable.
A Few Ways We Make It Special
Creating that family-like atmosphere doesn’t just happen on game days. It’s the little things off the field that build those bonds and make a team feel like home. Here are a few gatherings we’ve done that help bring everyone together:
🏈 NFL Draft Watch Party – Since our team plays spring football and the NFL Draft happens in April, we use it as a chance to come together. We’ll either have a short practice or a film day, then gather to watch the draft as a team. We’ve hosted it at both a local VFW hall and at someone’s house—both have worked out great! It’s a fun way to celebrate the sport, talk about future goals, and just hang out as a team.
🏈 College Game Day Trip – One of our favorite traditions is taking the team to a local college football game. We tailgate before the game, with everyone bringing something to share. Most colleges offer discounted group rates, making it an affordable and fun experience. The kids get to see the game played at a higher level, and it’s a great way to keep them inspired. Plus, who doesn’t love a good tailgate?
These little moments off the field help build the kind of team culture that keeps kids coming back year after year. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the wins—it’s about the experience.
What are some fun traditions your team does? I’d love to hear how other teams bring their families together!
